One of the top metal albums July 20, 2010 TheGodfather Peace Sells is a milestone album in 80's heavy metal. "Wake Up Dead" and "Peace Sells" are iconic, and "Devil's Island" is another strong song. With all that being said, I do have some problems with the lyrics in the next two songs although the music kicks ass: "The Conjuring" about black magic, and the disgusting "Black Friday". "I Ain't Superstitious" is a cheesy cover song that would have been better as a B-side (like "These Boots"). However, this was Dave Mustaine's and Megadeth's solid effort to compete with his former band Metallica. Metallica's early success was thanks to Mustaine's influence and the songs they had already written together. Unfortunately, this album marks the end of their first line-up, but they would have a better one with "Rust in Peace" through "Cryptic Writings". I still give the album five stars for its place in heavy metal history, the landmark "Wake Up Dead" video, its iconic songs, and awesome cover.
PEACE DOES SELL! June 16, 2010 A. Freda Peace sells is one of the best metal songs ever! I'd buy this just for that song.
Megadeth's best! April 23, 2010 Leadhead09 (Midwest City, OK United States) This is Megadeth's best in my opinion. I never owned the original so I have no say on which version sounds better. "The Conjuring", "Good Mourning/Black Friday", "Wake Up Dead", and "Peace Sells" are the top songs in Megadeth's catalog. This album is definitely a must buy.
Well Done March 27, 2010 Rexomus (Chicago) To me "Peace Sells" is one of the three classic Megadeth albums including: "Rust In Peace", and "Countdown". I've always had a fondness for this album but, until recently I never really appreciated "Peace Sells" until I heard this remixed and remastered version. I do own the other two albums remixed and original "Rust In Peace" and "Countdown". I did not like the "Countdown" remixes, the sampled snare drum killed it, in my opinion the original mixes were fine. I was hesitant to give this remixed album a chance. But after hearing previews of "Peace Sells" on amazon I was hooked. It's nice to be able to hear some of the subtleties that were lost in the original mix due to inferior technology and older mixing methods.
However great it is to hear the extra bits here and there that were previously buried in the original mix, there are a few times that Dave embellished the original tracks too much. For example on "The Conjuring" the last vocal line last a few beats to long, on "Wake Up Dead" the guitar solo holds the last note too long. During "Peace Sells" I could hear some heavy gating on the guitar tracks. At the same time, these are very trivial discrepancies and I must say that the drums and the bass have a much fuller, present, and punchier sound, while the guitars got an upgrade as well with a much more dynamic sound. All in all each instrument owns a specific stake in the frequency spectrum producing a much tighter, brighter, and bigger sound.
The tracks that stick out to me as sounding better are "Peace Sells", "Good Morning/Black Friday", "Bad Omen", "I Ain't Superstitious", and "My Last Words".
I think it's cool that Dave went back not to just remaster the original albums, like many lazy artists and cheap labels often do to generate new profit, but also tediously remixed them too. Though I may disagree with a small percentage of his decisions at the mixing console overall I am very impressed and pleased with how much better He made this album sound. I know some of you may disagree and that's fine but for me it's nice to re-experience this classic album mixed through today's superior studio technology.
Amazing March 2, 2010 MasterOvReality (The Axis of space and time) This album is not only essential to Megadeth fans, but should be among the collection of every metal listeners catalog. Everyone knows the iconic song "Peace Sells" with its bassline and memorable lyrics. "Wake Up Dead" has always been the real highlight of the album for me, the vocals make way for a riff and guitar solo excursion. This is one of Megadeth's best achievements of thrash metal, and those who primarily enjoy their 90's output may need some time to warm up to this one. If you enjoy this one then promptly see Megadeth's "Rust In Peace", it even makes this masterpiece pale in comparison.
