I own a couple copies of this for my Macs, And its a great spyware utility. Im sorry if some people thought it was an AV program - which is funny cause its clearly says on the box what it does. I have found this program to be very easy to use, very effective and trustworthy. Download the demo and try it, 1st time i did, I had tons of spyware and a slowed down mac - but much better now! Installing is quick and easy, and so is uninstalling - as every Mac program is. If your really not sure you uninstalled it completely, just search the hard drive! Besure not to install this or any program you own on a computer that is borrowed, or doesnt belong to you - its in most EUA's - HELLO!!??.
I 100% disagree with 1 star reviews, its a well rounded product! If you look, you can find a better deal than stated in some reviews.

I could wish I had read Andre Lawrence's review before I purchased MacScan from Office Depot for $29.99 plus tax on Feb. 18, 2008, but I didn't. He is spot on as to the total lack of MacScan customer support and service. There isn't any. You're on your own.
My problem was installing MacScan on a lap-top that belongs to the university I work for, and then having to turn that lap-top in. It was at that point I discovered you can only use the program on one computer at a time. If you want to use it on a second computer, you have to uninstall it from the first computer. Nothing on the MacScan box or website tells a potential buyer that it can only be used on one computer at a time.
There is no uninstall feature in MacScan so I had to simply drag the application to the trash and delete it. But that doesn't get it. The second computer still tells me that the serial number is "not valid" (because it is already in use) and I can't install MacScan on that computer. Out of curiosity I went back to the first computer, before I turned it in to my university, and tried to re-install it. But I couldn't. The serial number is now "not valid" because it is already in use.
It was at that point I called the MacScan customer support number on the website during the listed hours. No answer, so I left a message on the answering machine. I didn't get a call back, so I e-mailed customer support at the e-mail address on the website. I haven't heard back. I've sent a follow-up e-mail asking if "they," whoever "they" are, the MacScan people, have any intention of responding. But, of course, I've had not reply to that e-mail either.
So I've given up. $30 down the drain, wasted, on a program I can't run on any qualified Mac. Listen to what Andre Lawrence is telling you. It's straight talk. Stay away from this product. Whatever might, or might not, be wrong with it, there is NO support whatsoever, no one backing MacScan up. Yet another sorry example of what Bob Sullivan calls, in his book, GOTCHA CAPITALISM.

Update:Below this paragraph is my original review. But a word about this review. I bought MacScan in the Fall of 2007 and have had a series of ongoing problems with the software. Repeated attempts to get clarification went unheeded. I attempted several times during the end of the year to post the actual conversation I had with a Mac Technician, but Amazon refused to post it. By the end of this January, the owner of The MacScan sent me an email in which he wanted to rectify the problem. Well, the problem is not only with MacScan-- a lousy product but also with customer service more than 4 months passed since he responded to my question, but it was only after he read the review I wrote below. So, essentially he responded to a Amazon reviewer and not a MacScan purchaser.
This is the orginal review. I still stand by it.
I had heard the frightening news of hackers setting their sights on the Mac OSX. I thought a little extra protection would give me a piece of mind. I went to the Apple sight, itself, for recommendations. This is how I discovered MacScan.
I downloaded the 30-day trial and was initially surprised: it worked,as much as you'd expect a security software to find the ever present cookies. Now there are a couple of things to say at this point.
The very night that I bought the full version-- the software cease to work. In fact, the third screen that asks for scanning permission didn't appear. I panicked and called the telephone # several times. They never returned my call. I also sent an email, and got a return email-- 2 days later. We went back and forth several times before I just decided to rid the entire computer of all MacScan files then re-download the entire software. All seemed well for the next 6 weeks. In the meantime, I sought security information from MacOSX dot com. I was told that such software is nothing but unnecessary bloatware.
The technician also told me that MacScan and another security software were bad choices and that if I wanted extra security there was a number of free software available for the Mac that does the exact same thing as MacScan and they update their security list often.
It is now Sunday evening and I sent MacScan an email almost a week ago and I haven't heard back from them yet.
One additional note that I wasn't aware of. MacScan cannot prevent viruses. On the MacScan website, in their Q&A, they even admit as much. I don't download questionable material, but there are trojan viruses that attach themselves to seemingly innocent sites-- perhaps making sure that we use the OSX personal firewall (already a part of the OS) is all that's necessary.
The $25 I spent on this software was a waste.

This product is a no-brainer. I love it. It's easy to use, doesn't hog system resources, and protects me from all the viruses and trojans out there.

I've been a mac user and computer security consultant for seven years. Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix, and can be configured into one of the most secure operating systems. But a default installation of Mac OS is still prone to spyware or malware from unpatched machines, user fault, physical access or zero-day vulnerabilities.
I have been following macscan since early betas, and it has come a long way and keeps advancing.
